Starday Tavern brings a slice of classic honky-tonk energy to Southeast Portland, sitting right on Foster Road in a stretch that’s quietly become a hub for character-driven neighborhood spots. It’s a place that leans fully into its identity—country, Americana, and roots music aren’t just part of the programming, they are the backbone of the venue.
Established in 2013 as a Music Dive, replacing the former FoPo, Bob and Alice's Tavern, it was named after the famous record label Starday Records. Inside, the space balances dive bar familiarity with a clear musical focus. There’s a stage that anchors the room, a bar that keeps things moving, and just enough open space for people to dance when the mood hits—which, given the music, it often does. The decor nods to traditional country aesthetics without feeling overly themed, giving it a lived-in, authentic feel rather than something curated for effect.
Live music is central here. Local bands regularly play sets that range from classic country to outlaw, western swing, and broader Americana influences. It’s one of the few spots in Portland where this style of music has a consistent home, and that consistency draws a crowd that actually wants to hear it—and dance to it. The best part, it's usually FREE.
The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious. You don’t need to show up in boots, but you won’t feel out of place if you do. There’s a mix of regulars, music fans, and people discovering the space for the first time, all pulled together by the shared experience of the room.
Drinks are straightforward and in line with the vibe—nothing overly complicated, just a solid bar that supports the night without trying to steal focus. The energy builds naturally as the evening goes on, often shifting from relaxed early sets into a more lively, dance-oriented crowd later.
